The Twelve Signs
◇ ✦ ◇
The twelve signs are a way of dividing the wheel — and the year — into twelve distinct flavors of being. Each sign is a particular intersection of an element (fire, earth, air, water — the kind of energy) and a modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable — the kind of motion). Twelve unique combinations; twelve archetypal styles.
Aries opens the cardinal-fire chapter: initiative, the spark, the willingness to be first. Taurus follows as fixed earth: sensation, steadiness, what is worth keeping. Gemini brings mutable air: curiosity, connection, the love of more than one thing. The wheel turns through twelve such chapters and ends where it began — Pisces dissolving back into the source, mutable water at the edge of dissolution, then Aries again.
The sign a planet sits in colors how that planet expresses. Mars in Aries is direct, immediate, sometimes impatient. Mars in Cancer is more protective, indirect, defending what it loves. The planet remains the same actor; the sign rewrites their lines.
Signs are not personality types. A person is not their Sun sign. A whole chart is many signs working at once — the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant, and every other planet sitting in its own sign. The richer reading is the one that holds all twelve in mind.
Each sign also rules certain houses, certain themes, certain parts of the body, certain colors and seasons. The deeper the reading, the more these resonances accumulate.
