Reading Changing Lines
◇ ✦ ◇
The single feature that separates a serious I Ching reading from a generic blurb is how it handles changing lines. A cast does not simply hand you six line texts to read top to bottom. The *number* of moving lines determines exactly which texts apply — and the rest, while available, recede.
Why lines move
Recall the four values: a line cast as 6 (old yin) or 9 (old yang) is *moving*. It stands at its turning point and transforms into its opposite. Apply every moving line and the first hexagram — your primary figure, the situation as it stands — becomes a second hexagram, the resulting figure, the situation as it is tending. Lines cast as 7 or 8 are stable and do not move.
The reading rules
A widely-used classical convention (associated with the Song scholar Zhu Xi) makes the number of moving lines decide what to read:
| Moving lines | What the reading leads with |
|---|---|
| 0 | The Judgment of the primary hexagram only — the situation is settled, not in transition. |
| 1 | That single moving line — the one point of change carries the message. |
| 2 | Both moving lines, with the upper one weighted. |
| 3 | The Judgments of both the primary and the resulting hexagram. |
| 4 | The two unchanging lines of the resulting hexagram, the lower of them weighted. |
| 5 | The one unchanging line of the resulting hexagram. |
| 6 | The Judgment of the resulting hexagram. (For Hexagrams 1 Qián and 2 Kūn, a special "all-lines" text applies.) |
Aurathea makes this rule-set an explicit, documented policy and leads the reading with exactly the texts that apply, so you are reading what the tradition says is relevant — not wading through six lines hoping one fits.
Primary and resulting, held together
The two hexagrams are read as a *movement*, not two separate fortunes. The primary names where you stand; the resulting names the direction of change implicit in it. The moving lines are the hinge between them. A reading with no moving lines is an image to settle into; a reading with several is an image of a situation actively turning.
The honesty of "leads with"
Aurathea reads the tradition's rules faithfully and stops where the tradition's wisdom and our own commitment agree: the texts describe an *image of change*, not a dated forecast of your affairs. The changing lines tell you which images to weigh. What they mean for your own path is yours to discern — the part of the encounter we are careful never to take from you.
