Retrograde

Apparent backward motion of a planet through the zodiac as observed from Earth. This optical illusion occurs due to the relative orbital speeds of Earth and the planet. In astrology, retrograde periods are associated with introspection, revision, and re-evaluation of matters ruled by that planet. The retrograde symbol (R or ℞) appears next to planets in a birth chart that were in retrograde motion at the time of birth.
