The Lineage of Number

Where does the claim that numbers carry meaning actually come from? This track uses that claim freely elsewhere; this article is the one place it slows down to ask what the tradition's authority for it actually rests on — documentary fact in some places, honest ascription in others, and never blurred between the two.

The person most numerology traces itself back to is Pythagoras, and the honest version of that claim is this: “The attribution of number-meaning to Pythagoras is traditional rather than documentary — no writing of his survives, and the school kept its teaching oral. What can be said is that the Pythagorean school treated number as the structure of things, and that Western numerology has understood itself as an heir of that school since at least Agrippa's *De Occulta Philosophia* (1533).” That is not a hedge meant to soften the claim; it is the claim, stated with exactly the certainty the record supports — no more, no less.

Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa published *De Occulta Philosophia libri tres* in 1533, treating number as a structuring principle in a dated, documented work — the point Western numerology has cited as its bridge from the ancient schools ever since. Nearly four centuries later, Mrs. L. Dow Balliett's *The Philosophy of Numbers: Its Facts, Figures, and Fables* (1908) gave the modern Western, Pythagorean-based practice an early systematic treatment. Dr. Juno Jordan's *Numerology: The Romance in Your Name* (1965) is credited with systematizing the Life Path, Expression, and Soul Urge terminology this track uses throughout.

What it is not is an unbroken line of doctrinal transmission, a single founding moment for “modern numerology” as a movement, or a claim that any one figure originated what came after. Western numerology understands itself as the heir of the Pythagorean school's orientation — that is the honest hedge in the tradition's own self-understanding, carried in the very passage quoted above, and this track does not claim more certainty than the tradition claims for itself.
