Morinus

The Morinus house system was developed by Jean-Baptiste Morin de Villefranche, a prominent French astrologer and mathematician of the 17th century. Morin's method divides the celestial equator — the projection of Earth's equator onto the celestial sphere — into twelve equal segments of 30 degrees each, then projects these divisions onto the ecliptic to establish the house cusps. What makes Morinus unique among house systems is that it does not anchor itself to the Ascendant or Midheaven as house cusps. Instead, these sensitive points float freely within the houses, occupying whatever position the mathematics of the moment dictate rather than being fixed to the first and tenth house cusps.
This detachment from the traditional angular framework gives Morinus a distinctive character in practice. By liberating the Ascendant and MC from their conventional roles as house rulers, the system encourages astrologers to evaluate these points on their own terms — as powerful indicators of personality and vocation that operate independently of house structure. Some modern astrologers favor Morinus precisely for this mathematical purity, arguing that it separates two conceptual layers that other systems conflate: the framework of life domains (houses) and the personal axes of identity and aspiration (Ascendant and MC). The system works consistently at all latitudes, avoiding the distortions that affect time-based systems near the poles.
On a deeper level, Morinus invites a contemplative shift in how we understand the relationship between self and circumstance. When the Ascendant is no longer locked to the first house cusp, identity is freed from being defined solely by one life domain. Instead, the rising degree becomes a wandering point of awareness that can illuminate any area of life with its particular quality. This philosophical stance resonates with those who see the birth chart not as a fixed map of fate but as a dynamic field of potential — one where even the most fundamental markers of selfhood remain in creative dialogue with the whole.
