Alcabitius
◇ ✦ ◇
The Alcabitius house system traces its origins to the 10th-century Arabic astrologer Abd al-Aziz al-Qabisi, whose Latinized name gives the system its title. Alcabitius employs a semi-arc method of house division: it calculates the diurnal and nocturnal arcs — the paths a degree of the zodiac traces above and below the horizon — and divides each arc into three equal portions to establish the intermediate house cusps. The Ascendant and Midheaven serve as the primary anchors, with the remaining cusps interpolated between them. This approach produces houses of unequal size that shift with both latitude and the obliquity of the ecliptic.
Alcabitius was the dominant house system in Arabic astrology during its golden age and subsequently became the standard method throughout medieval European astrology, holding that position until the rise of Regiomontanus in the 15th century. For centuries, the great works of horary, natal, and mundane astrology were interpreted through Alcabitius cusps. The system has experienced a notable revival in recent decades alongside the broader resurgence of traditional and medieval astrological techniques. Practitioners of Hellenistic and medieval methods often turn to Alcabitius as historically faithful to the texts they study, and many find that it produces meaningfully different results from modern time-based systems, particularly in horary work where precise house placement can determine the outcome of a judgment.
Working with Alcabitius connects the modern practitioner to a millennium of astrological tradition. It offers a reminder that the methods we use are not arbitrary choices but carry the accumulated wisdom and observation of generations. The semi-arc approach balances mathematical elegance with astronomical reality, honoring both the geometry of the sky and the lived experience of day and night. For those drawn to the roots of the Western astrological tradition, Alcabitius provides a bridge between the insights of the medieval Arabic world and contemporary practice — a system seasoned by centuries of use and refined by some of history's most rigorous astrological minds.
