Understanding the Hermetic Lots: Calculated Points of Fortune and Spirit

◇ ✦ ◇

Points You Calculate, Not Planets You See

Most of a chart is made of things you can point to in the sky — planets, the Sun and Moon, the rising degree. The lots (also called Arabic Parts, though they are far older than the Arabic tradition that preserved them) are different. They are calculated points: sensitive places in the zodiac found by simple arithmetic between three parts of your chart. The idea is ancient and quietly profound. By measuring the distance between two chart factors and projecting it from a third — usually the Ascendant — astrologers derived points that concentrate a particular theme: fortune, purpose, love, courage. The Hermetic Lots are a set of seven attributed to the tradition of Hermes — one keyed to each of the seven classical planets — and given their clearest surviving statement by the 4th-century astrologer Paulus Alexandrinus. Each is a lens onto one dimension of a life.

The Two That Anchor Everything: Fortune and Spirit

Two lots sit at the centre of the whole system, and they are mirror images of each other. The Lot of Fortune (Pars Fortunae), keyed to the Moon, is found in a day chart by taking the distance from the Sun to the Moon and projecting it from the Ascendant: > Fortune = Ascendant + Moon − Sun (day) The Lot of Spirit, keyed to the Sun, reverses it — the distance from the Moon to the Sun: > Spirit = Ascendant + Sun − Moon (day) Their meanings divide life into two halves. Fortune is the lot of the body and circumstance — health, livelihood, the material conditions that come to you, the things that happen to you. Spirit is the lot of the soul and will — mind, action, career, what you reach for. Fortune is what fortune gives; Spirit is what you do with it. Sect matters. In a night chart, the formulas reverse — Fortune becomes Ascendant + Sun − Moon, and Spirit the opposite. This day/night flip runs through all of traditional astrology; see the Sect article for why the chart's "time of day" changes so much.

The Other Five Hermetic Lots

The remaining five lots each refine a more specific theme, and — this is the elegant part — each is built in turn from Fortune or Spirit, which is why those two come first. Two are derived from Spirit (what your will reaches toward), and three from Fortune (what circumstance asks of you). Aurathea computes all seven, with the correct day/night reversal. Spirit-derived — what you reach toward: - Eros (Venus) — desire, love, what draws you and what you long for. - Victory (Jupiter) — success, confidence, alliances, where effort tends to be rewarded. Fortune-derived — what circumstance asks of you: - Necessity (Mercury) — constraint, obligation, the places life narrows and asks something unavoidable of you. - Courage (Mars) — boldness, daring, the capacity to act under pressure. - Nemesis (Saturn) — limitation and the hidden, the encounters with fate and what must be released. The day-chart formulas (each reverses by sect, exactly as Fortune and Spirit do — swap the two terms that follow the Ascendant for a night birth): > Eros = Ascendant + Venus − Spirit (day) > Victory = Ascendant + Jupiter − Spirit (day) > Necessity = Ascendant + Fortune − Mercury (day) > Courage = Ascendant + Fortune − Mars (day) > Nemesis = Ascendant + Fortune − Saturn (day) Read together, the seven sketch a fuller emotional and existential map than the planets alone: not just what is in your chart, but where fortune, purpose, love, and limitation are concentrated.

How to Read the Lots on Aurathea

The Lots tab places each of the seven Hermetic Lots by sign and house and offers an interpretation of what that placement emphasises. Reading habits: - Start with Fortune and Spirit. They are the foundation. The house each falls in shows where your circumstances (Fortune) and your purpose (Spirit) are most alive. - The house is the story. A lot's house placement is usually more telling than fine aspects — it shows the area of life the theme settles into. - Hold them as emphasis, not destiny. A well-placed Lot of Victory is an invitation to notice where your effort finds traction — not a guarantee of winning. The Part of Fortune you may already have met in your natal chart is exactly this Lot of Fortune; the Lots tab simply widens the circle to the full seven.

Where to Go Deeper

See Part of Fortune for the gateway lot in natal context, Sect (Day/Night Charts) for why the formulas reverse, and Traditional vs. Modern Planetary Rulers for the ruler logic that colours how each lot is read. The lots reward slow acquaintance — begin with Fortune and Spirit, and let the rest open over time.
